As we say goodbye to 2012 and hello to 2013, I have picked some of my favorite bubbles of this year to make it a memorable evening. These are all available at your local fine wine shop or online.
Pol Roger White Foil Champagne NV (375 ml $30). This champagne will make you feel like royalty. It was the champagne that was served at the reception following the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales to Miss Catherine Middleton. 33% Pinot Noir, 33%Pinot Meunier and 33% chardonnay. A fragrant, light, floral wine with a lasting sparkle that will surely leave you longing for more. Click here for more info
Anno Domini, Prosecco DOC 2011 Extra Dry (750ml $16) Tasty, light, fine delicate with long-lasting characteristics of golden delicious apples. A wonderful way to start the evening. Pair with a nice brie or other soft cheese.
HOM Extra Brut, Cava La Carmela, Argentina. 70%Chardonnay 30% Chenin Blanc. A great easy drinking sparkling wine, sure to please the most discriminating palate. The wine was fresh, and golden with tasty, nutty undertones. With an over abundance of tiny bubbles that continued through the end of the bottle. Click here to purchase.
Gloria Ferrer Royal Cuvee, 1995 Brut Vintage Reserve (current vintage 2004). I had a bottle of 1995 that I shelved for the last 13 years. It still held on. I would not have let it sit another second. Freshness of the wine was gone, but what could I expect, I might have left this one too long. Still had nice, subtle citrus notes and small beading that did not last too long. This does not change my overall opinion of the quality of wines that are produced by Gloria Ferrer. This was the first sparkling house I went to in California and remains one of my favorites. You know what to expect vintage to vintage. Always a top pick in my book.
Regardless of what wine is in your glass, relax and enjoy it.
Many blessings and happiness to you and your loved ones for a great 2013. Cheers!
